Supply Chain Integrity Many recent examples of contaminated food, toys and drugs coming from outside the U.S. have highlighted the integrity of U.S. supply chains as a critical issue. U.S. Congress reacted by proposing several pieces of legislation giving the FDA more authority in this area, and the FDA initiated a series of industry/FDA conferences to discuss the matter. At the first of these conferences, convened over a year ago in Washington DC, the FDA invited SST’s Dr. Arthur Fabian to present SST’s approach to ensuring integrity within the critical part it plays in the supply chain as a distributor and manufacturers’ representative. The drug industry’s reaction has been rapid, with increased effort on the part of dosage form manufacturers to verify that all links in the supply chain for their APIs and Excipients are qualified via their own Vendor Audit Qualification Program. These manufacturers may or may not have experienced this level of visibility before. SST is a critical link in the supply chain for the API manufacturers we represent, not only because we market, sell, receive, store and distribute the API - but also because we are the Importer of Record (i.e. the first entity to receive the API when it arrives in the US). This positions SST immediately at the point of highest risk (after intercontinental transit). Our customers have recognized this and recently SST has seen a dramatic increase in the number of quality assurance questionnaires. This year, we have hosted several on-site customer inspections of our warehouse and audits of our overall GMP quality system. We expect this trend to continue. The regulatory world is changing and SST remains on the leading edge - contributing to a Win, Win, Win situation for suppliers, customers and SST alike.
